(July 21) -- Some 20 people have been diagnosed with hepatitis A in Rock
Island, Ill., on the border with Iowa. Two of them are employees at a local
McDonald's, causing fears of a wider outbreak.
State health officials said the Milan, Ill., McDonald's stayed open for more
than a month after the first worker contracted hepatitis A, serving as many
as 10,000 people, UPI reported.
County health officials closed the restaurant for three days last week, and
are offering free inoculations to people who ate there earlier this month,
reported the Quad-City Times, a local newspaper.
Hepatitis A is one of the mildest forms of hepatitis, causing flu-like
symptoms and, in some cases, jaundice. It affects the liver but doesn't do
permanent damage. It's generally transmitted when people don't wash their
hands after using the bathroom.
Health authorities are investigating why it took the McDonald's so long to
close.
